The “Amarone della Valpollicella D.O.C.” is produced in 19 communes of the province of Verona.
This very fine wine was born around 1950, probably because of a mistake in the preparation of the “Recioto” wine.
The “Amarone” is a noble wine, produced in small quantities, with a craft method, from the grapes of the lands of the “Valpollicella Classico”, harvest by hand and left to wither in special containers for about 4-5 months.
As a consequence of withering the grapes raise the concentration of sugar of about 25-30%. At the end of February the grapes are pressed and left to ferment for about 25-30 days, then the wine is put into some steel casks and allowed to mature “in barrique” for 16-20 months and finally aged in the bottle for at least 8 months.
This wine obtained the Controlled Designation of Origin in 1968. It has some unique features, it is rich in alcohol, in glycerine. Although, it is very much structured and powerful, the “Amarone” is elegant, in fact it has no equal in the world.
It is a strong, full-bodied wine of an intense garnet red. Firm, with clear and fresh smells that reminds of redcurrant, blackberries and almonds, with some light hints of vanilla. It ha a very good structure, with smooth and velvety tannins, an harmonious aftertaste, long and persistent.
It can be conserved for more than 20 years.
We recommend to open the bottle two hours before drinking it and, if necessary, to arrange the decanting in a carafe.
It is excellent with red meats and with hearty game dishes, with barbecued meats, braised meats and ,mature cheeses.
Colour: Deep ruby-red
Smell: Distinctive spiced, marked.
Taste: Full, velvety, robust.
This wine has been awarded with a silver medal at the “2003 Brussels World Contest”; and with two glasses on the “2003 Gambero Rosso Wine Guide”.
