This wine is produced with “Nebbiolo” grapes from the typical area of“Barolo”. It is aged in Slavonia oak casks for more than twenty-four months before being bottled.
This wine, defined as “the king of wines and the king’s wine”, thanks to its regal attitudes, this splendid red wine from the Piedmont, is one the showpieces of the Italian art of wine-making.
The “Barolo” kept its fame of “king’s wine” from the Middle Ages and even in the following centuries. It was usually consumed by the sovereigns and the nobles, who used to enrich their tables with classic bottles of dark Bordeaux and Burgundy. In accordance with the story, the “Barolo” was often present on Louis XIV table, but it was also appreciated by King “Carlo Alberto”, the Marquis of “Saluzzo” and by those of “Monferrato”, Maria Cristina of Savoy.
Nevertheless, many other famous personalities helped to give importance to this wine, among them Camillo Benso of Cavour is probably the one who gave the greatest contribution.
As a matter of fact, the Count of Cavour used to offer sumptuous dinners, where the wine was a prerogative. He devoted himself to the estate of “Grinzane”, to the production of Barolo, obtaining excellent results. In a short period of time Cavour became an expert wine grower and the “Barolo” of his vineyards was able to compete with the best French wines.
Even the Popes were held spellbound by this wine: at the beginning of 1800 Pope “Pio VII”, after tasting some excellent “Barolo” cried out «Beautiful sky and good wine». After that, he asked to have always some Barolo for himself.
Thanks to its excellent quality, there have been many poets and writers who paid their homage to such a praised wine.
