In the dialect of several western Alps populations the name génépy (word with celtic origins) indicates some small mountain herbs belonging to the genus Artemisia.
They live at more than 2000m. of altitude, sometimes reaching even 3500m. and they grow on morainic lands that the glaciers leave uncovered during their cyclical retreats.
From this herb the strong-flavoured liqueur is obtained by infusion, with the addition of hydrated alcohol and sugar.
It is consumed pure, with hot water or on top of small sugar cubes.
